Do I legally need a cookie consent banner?
If you have visitors in the EU or UK and you use any non-essential cookies (analytics, advertising or embedded media), the GDPR and the ePrivacy rules require you to obtain prior opt-in consent before those cookies load. Strictly necessary cookies do not need consent, but you must still disclose them.
What is the difference between opt-in and opt-out consent?
Opt-in (EU/UK) means non-essential cookies must stay off until the visitor actively agrees. Opt-out (US) lets you load cookies by default but you must offer a clear way to refuse or to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. The generator adjusts the banner wording to match the model you choose.
Does this set the cookies or block them for me?
No. This tool generates the banner text and cookie policy wording. Actually blocking non-essential scripts until consent is given is handled by your store platform or a consent management script. This tool gives you the compliant copy to pair with it.
Is my information uploaded anywhere?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and the copy, TXT and PDF exports are all produced on your device.
How often should I review my cookie policy?
Review it whenever you add or remove a tracking tool, change analytics or ad providers, or expand to new countries, and at least once a year. Update the effective date each time you make a change.
